Bradley Dolls
Many years ago a family friend gave me a beautiful doll with large blue eyes and an Edwardian style gown. She was at least 1 foot tall and quite beautiful. Of course I didn't care for as I probably should have and who knows where she is now. I had not seen another like her until surfing etsy vintage. It turns out she was a "Bradley Doll". Bradley dolls were hugely popular in the 70s and are known by several different names according to Dollkind.com including: "Boudoir dolls, Stockinette dolls, Cloth Dolls, Southern Belle Dolls, Victorian Dolls, Living Dolls and Big-Eyed Dolls.".
Here are some examples from Ebay...

Look Inspiration: The New Girl
Mad Men, 1962
Although Joan Siegel (played by Peyton List) is not my favorite addition to the cast of Mad Men, I'm slowly working my way down the line of female characters for various Look Inspirations.
Isn't that hairstyle fabulous?!

Retro Recipe: Peach Cobbler
One of my very favorite southern desserts is Peach Cobbler. Its easy to make and unbelievably good.
Source: FoodNetwork.com Paula Deen's Peach Cobbler
4 cups peeled, sliced peaches
2 cups sugar, divided
1/2 cup water
8 tablespoons butter
1 1/2 cups self-rising flour
1 1/2 cups milk
Ground cinnamon, optional
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Combine the peaches, 1 cup sugar, and water in a saucepan and mix well. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat.
Put the butter in a 3-quart baking dish and place in oven to melt.
Mix remaining 1 cup sugar, flour, and milk slowly to prevent clumping. Pour mixture over melted butter. Do not stir. Spoon fruit on top, gently pouring in syrup. Sprinkle top with ground cinnamon, if using. Batter will rise to top during baking. Bake for 30 to 45 minutes.
To serve, scoop onto a plate and serve with your choice of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Dotty for Dotted Digits
Polka Dot Manicure
Today I saw a girl with the most Totally Boss manicure. If done right, I could see how this could really compliment the perfect retro outfit.
POLKA DOT FINGERNAILS!!!
I know!
So I did a search to find out how to get the look and found a great "How To" feature on bellasugar...
"here's what you'll need:
Black nail polish (try Sinful Colors [$1.99] in Black on Black)
White nail polish (like Sephora by OPI [$9] in A-ha! Moment
Top coat and base coat
Wooden toothpicks
After painting nails with a base coat, paint them with black or white polish. (For the white polish, you'll need two coats.) Then, dip a toothpick into the opposite color. Carefully place a drop of the polish on your nail, repeating until you have the pattern you want. Let nails dry for up to 30 minutes, then seal with a top coat. Easy!"-bellasugar (8/25/08)
I'm definitely doing this soon and will post pics. I'm thinking that I'd like to do red with white dots... or white with multiple colored dots. What would you do?

Retro Homecoming Looks
In Texas, the appearance of giant silk mums with feet of trailing ribbon and tinkling charms can only mean one thing... its homecoming season! I have assembled some affordable, retro inspired dress picks for girls who would rather look like they are the Class of 1958 than 2008 (because we all know the dress is way more important than if your school actually wins or not).
Glitter Homecoming Dress
Store: JCPenney
Price: $69.99
Heartbreaker Fashion Sweetie Dress
Store: PinupGirlClothing
Price: $92.00
Stop Staring Red Grace Dress
Store: DaddyOs
Price: $94.95
Kelly Green Trixie2 Dress
Store: Trashy Diva
Price: $34.00
Editor's Note: I own this dress in green, navy, and cherry red. This is the real deal ladies. You will stop people dead in their tracks in this one. Its a heavy cotton fabric that with the right hair and makeup can be dressed up for night looks and dressed down for sunny days come summer. It all depends on the shoes and the hair.

Look Inspiration: Peggy Olson
Mad Men-1962
I'm sure its apparent that I am a HUGE Joan fan, but I know before I do another Look Inspiration based on Joan I have to pay homage to plucky Peggy Olson (played by Elisabeth Moss). I love Peggy's back story and am super excited about a major change in her look that I think they are building up to in the story line for Season 2. I'll keep you posted!

Jackie or Marilyn?
There has been a lot of online chatter about the most recent "Maidenform" episode of Mad Men. Its certainly not my favorite episode, but it did offer an interesting perspective on the early 60s woman. Basically, one of the ad execs proposed the idea that women of the time were either Marilyns (as in Monroe) or Jackies (as in Kennedy). I thought this was really quite interesting. To me, it doesn't seem like that much has changed. Or at least the part about how many men see women. Either you are a "good girl" or a "bad girl". As I recall, this was a topic even addressed in an episode of Sex in the City. What do you think? Discuss...
